Cancelling Disney Channel Is Not Child Abuse...

Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God

My husband and I read Crazy Love by Frances Chan this summer. It completely changed the way we think about everything! If you have not read this book yet, I would HIGHLY recommend it. We are now teaching it as a series to our senior youth Sunday school class. Teaching it to our youth group, has changed how we think even more. Because sometimes you have to work a little harder to explain your points to youth (especially early in the morning) since they are not always open to discussion.

Last Sunday we were teaching chapter 8, which discusses the need to fully rely on God financially. The idea of not needing retirement accounts or savings accounts because if you are truly relying on Him, then you know that He will provide. When the Bible speaks of financial responsibility... responsibility is helping others and not wasting your money on selfish things or building our savings accounts for the what ifs. Think about how different this world would be if everyone lived for God and helped one another instead of always thinking of themselves first...everyone's needs would always be covered. While you are taking care of others needs, someone else is taking care of yours.

We shared with them this chapter was the hardest for us to think about because in this society it is so hard to surrender the financial aspects of life. However, we are suppose to trust it all to God since it is never ours to begin with. We are not to become so embedded in this world that we see it as our home nor are we to feel that our lives are better because of "stuff".

So, when teaching this to the youth group, we shared an example that we had just started in our home. We recently cancelled all cable channels, with the exception of just receiving the four network channels. This saves us $60 a month, which we now plan to use to help others with their adoption expenses. Boy, did this example get the teens' attention! They thought we were crazy! "Who lives without cable?", they questioned. They also expressed concern for our children not having the Disney channel. My husband assured them that our children not having the Disney channel is not child abuse and that there are far more important things than cable in this world. I am pretty sure they will not be wanting to hang out at our house any time soon. However, I hope that they see the point of what we were trying to share.

Many times throughout this study with have shared with them the following ... You can never do anything to repay God for what He has given us through Jesus. You are saved by grace. He does not need us, nor does He need us to do anything for Him...He is God. However, He longs for us. He wants us to come to Him and He wants us to live for Him.

It is like when we teach our children manners over and over. It does not mean as much when they are prompted by us saying, "What do you say?" Then they say, "Thank you." However, when one of our children walks up to someone on their own and says, "Thank you for what you did. I really appreciated you taking the time to help me." THEN, that means the world to the person they are thanking. As their parents we are overcome with emotion for them taking the time to show appreciation to others. Or How much would it mean if we gave the kids money and told them they HAD to buy something for someone in need. Yes, it would be nice on our part, but how much more meaning would it have if they decided that they wanted to spend their money to buy something for someone in need? These are some of the points that we have made with the youth that seemed to click not only for them, but for us too. He doesn't need us to do anything for others, but He longs for it...

We found this video of Frances Chan, sharing his thoughts on Proverbs 30: 7-9.

Proverbs 30: 7-9

"Two things I ask of you, O LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:

Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.

Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, 'Who is the LORD ?'
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.

LOL, we have no TV at all and people think we're nuts. Honestly we save a ton of money and spend our time doing much more important things than sitting in front of a tv.

I am trying to get up the nerve to sell my car but I just can't let go of it. I don't know why it is so hard for me to let go of it.

Since we only have the four basics we watch alot of wheel and Jeopardy. My mother-in-law watches both everynight with her mother-in-law (who lives across the driveway from her)...so it's are little connection to them!

We have the Disney channel and I often use this to take away from my 6-year-old when she misbehaves. My 2 1/2 year old could probably do without it as long as she has her Dora movie and her Handy Many tools to play with. But this sounds like a good idea. We are trying to find ways to cut costs. We watch a lot of TV although we often fall asleep at night when watching it, lol!! I should get this book. I liked the comment about how the teenagers probably wouldn't want to come to your house anytime soon. That is funny!! Thanks for this wonderful post.

Amy,

We have been considering this very option as not only a way to curb unnecessary expenses but as a way of spending more time together.

You can always locate your favorite shows on the internet to watch when you want with limited commercials if any.

Amazing. I read this book as well and continue to be challenged by it. I need to read it again and really take the time to make some changes in our home, too.

Thank you for the reminder.

I have been hearing so much about that book. I think I really need to get it. I would totally be ok without the TV even in our house.

I have been contemplating cutting our satellite out too. It would save a little. I think the less tv the better.

I loved Crazy Love and it changed the way I view everything too! We are starting our small group study on it this Friday and I'm so excited because no one else in our group has read the book....I'm excited to introduce these ideas to them because we are a brand new church and I think the ideas he presents in his book are so life-changing.

I just had a breakthrough this week when I realized that God does not "need" me to do anything. But, he can "use" me if I choose to obey and follow His will. That's so neat to think about!

I am reading Crazy Love right now. We are ditching cable this week as a matter of fact! And our land line phone. In so doing we can sponsor more children and help others with adoptions! Loved this post!!!!

I've been wanting to read Crazy Love for awhile!

We don't have cable either -- truthfully, we have more entertainment options than we need as it is. I don't need to add 200 more TV channels to the mix!

Good post!

This is awesome and I think I'm going to get this book. The financial aspect is great and something that we have operated in our entire marriage, and even before then as singles. Relying on institutions and government programs to take care of you when you're older is not what God intended. Do you know that the word retire cannot be found in the Bible. That's a fact.

Outside of our mortgage on our home, we are financially free. We always pay cash for everything we buy - and if it means we can't purchase something until we have all the money - then we wait. We tithe and sow seed consistently and we are never lacking in our finances. Wonderful news for a one income family. We attribute our financial well being to God and Him being faithful to His Word. We believe that He is able and wants to increase us so we can be a blessing to the nations of the earth (as He told Abraham). You know how I feel about that already. Our cars are paid for. Our clothes are paid for. Our dinners and gasoline are paid for. My daughter's school tuition is paid for. We owe nobody nothing for that stuff. "Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another" Romans 13:8a

We prioritize and I think a lot of young people - and now the average adult - have a hard time with that concept. They don't want to be without. They want to have what everyone else has. So, they buy everything on debt and this debt will be something their kids will have to pay off. I heard a great comment once: The bed you slept in as a child that your parents put on their credit card - you will ended up paying for it still when your parents pass away and leave their debt to you. Eye opener.
I could go on and on - but I won't. I want to get that book!

I've never heard of this book, but it sounds good. I'm going to look for it at the library - 'cause I'm cheap like that (and we don't have cable either.)
